Not far from the south coast of Crete there is one of the largest and most famous gorges called Imbros. It begins in the village of Imbros, and ends in the village of Komitades. The length of the gorge is 8 kilometres. A few decades ago, it was the only road that connected the villages of the Sfakia district with the northern areas of the island.

Special Features of the Gorge

Since ancient times, Imbros has played a main role for the people of Sfakia. They could only maintain contact with the inhabitants of other regions thanks to the gorge, because until the 1960s it was the only connecting route. Cavities and caves, located inside the mountains, played the role of shelters.

The route begins with modest landscapes, which turn into picturesque roads in a few minutes. In some areas, you can see the remains of an ancient road that was paved with stones. Little by little the road becomes more and more narrow: in some places its width does not exceed two meters. Numerous rocks can be seen all around.

The flora of the gorge is very rich and diverse. It is represented by:

2. Plane trees.
3. Pine trees.
4. Olive trees.
5. Cypress trees.

At the end of the route there is a stone arch, which is one of the favourite places for taking photos.

• Take a drinking water;

The most favourable season to visit this sight is from April to May. During this time, the area is full of green plantings and bright colours. It is very comfortable to travel in autumn since, in the absence of rain, there is no intense heat. Clouds give a special flavour and create a fabulous atmosphere.
