Chrissi is considered to be one of the most picturesque islands. Its beaches are recognized as one of the most beautiful. The island is uninhabited. There are not even hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops that are so well-known to tourists. You will be surrounded only by nature – and this is the best that it can offer you.
The name of the island means “golden”. Indeed, the golden colour of the sand and the turquoise sea create an incredible play of colours and shades.
Earlier (70 thousand years ago) the island was completely under water. It was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption. In the eastern part of Chrissi there is the highest point, which is 31 meters above sea level.
In addition to untouched nature, the island is famous for its forests, in which there are quite rare representatives of the local flora. This is represented by juniper and Lebanese cedar. What’s interesting is that the Lebanese cedar needs no fresh water for its existence. The age of plants is about 2 hundred years. Despite such an impressive age, they are not very large: their height rarely exceeds 10 meters (although in favourable conditions it can reach 50 meters). The reasons for this are strong winds, which are frequent visitors thereto. They gave the trees incredible shapes. Due to the fact that a lot of rare plants grow in Chrissi, the territory of the island is considered to be a preserved area and protected by the international environmental service. It is not allowed to live here, arrange camping, place tents, etc.
The best place of the island is the Golden Beach. The Beach fascinates with its golden sand, dotted with fine shells, as well as incredible cleanliness and clear sea water. On the east side there is the Kataprosopo Beach, from where it is easy to get to the neighbouring island (Mikronisi). Original photos can be taken on the Hadzivolakas Beach located to the west. In its territory there is much less sand, but there are plenty of stones and trees growing almost in the water.
The high season falls on July-August. If you don’t want to see a lot of people on the beach, then go there until June or in September.
