Knossos Palace – Myth, History & Private Tour in Crete

Knossos Palace: Myths, History & Private Tours in Crete

The Knossos Palace is one of Crete’s most iconic landmarks and a must-see for anyone fascinated by ancient civilizations. Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” this archaeological treasure blends myth, history, and timeless beauty.

Knossos Palace and the Myth of the Minotaur

Greek mythology comes to life in the Palace of Knossos. Legend has it that King Minos ordered the construction of a vast labyrinth to imprison the fearsome Minotaur — a creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull. The famous architect Daedalus designed this maze, making it nearly impossible to escape.

To keep the beast fed, Athens had to send seven young men and seven maidens each year. That is, until the brave Theseus arrived. With the help of Ariadne, King Minos’s daughter, and her magical thread, he defeated the Minotaur and found his way out of the labyrinth.

History Behind the Walls of Knossos Palace

The earliest version of Knossos Palace dates back to around 2000 BC, but a massive earthquake destroyed it. It was later rebuilt, only to be devastated again by the eruption of Santorini’s volcano.

In 1900, British archaeologist Arthur Evans began excavations at the site and undertook a partial reconstruction. Thanks to his efforts, visitors today can experience a glimpse of the ancient Minoan world.

Exploring the Architecture of Knossos Palace

Western Courtyard

The palace’s western yard likely served as the main entrance. It features three stone-lined pits, whose use is still debated — were they for grain storage or sacred rituals?

The Procession Corridor

This long corridor features remarkable frescoes, depicting ceremonial scenes with youth offering gifts to the gods.

Central Courtyard

The paved central yard may have been the heart of religious and social life in ancient Crete.

Three-Storey Residential Area

Dating to around 1600 BC, this section includes the symbolic “Horns of Consecration” — a feature that continues to puzzle historians.

Famous Frescoes

Inside the palace, visitors can admire reconstructions of original frescoes like “The Prince of the Lilies” and “The Rhyton Bearer”, showcasing Minoan artistry at its best.
