Knossos Palace and the Myth of the Minotaur

Greek mythology comes to life in the Palace of Knossos. Legend has it that King Minos ordered the construction of a vast labyrinth to imprison the fearsome Minotaur — a creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull. The famous architect Daedalus designed this maze, making it nearly impossible to escape.

To keep the beast fed, Athens had to send seven young men and seven maidens each year. That is, until the brave Theseus arrived. With the help of Ariadne, King Minos’s daughter, and her magical thread, he defeated the Minotaur and found his way out of the labyrinth.

History Behind the Walls of Knossos Palace

The earliest version of Knossos Palace dates back to around 2000 BC, but a massive earthquake destroyed it. It was later rebuilt, only to be devastated again by the eruption of Santorini’s volcano.

In 1900, British archaeologist Arthur Evans began excavations at the site and undertook a partial reconstruction. Thanks to his efforts, visitors today can experience a glimpse of the ancient Minoan world.
