At the beginning of the tour we will go to Damnoni village, where you can get acquainted with local sights and culture. Next, be ready for a sea voyage to of the most beautiful beaches located in the southern part of the island.
Preveli (the official name Finikas) is located about 35 kilometers from Rethymnon. The beach is famous not for its delightful landscapes, but also for the palm forest that grows along the banks of the full-flowing small Kourtaliotis river. The area of the palm grove is quite impressive, so it is the second largest grove the island (the first is Vai Beach in the eastern part of Crete).
Unfortunately, 2010 caused an immense damage to the beach: then there was a strong fire that destroyed most of the palm forest. Experts argued that it would take about 3 decades to restore it. However, today we see that the efforts of caring people covered the cost of something and more: Majestic palm trees are the main decoration of the beach. And there are a lot of them.
Another uniqueness of the beach is that a small lagoon has created near the river mouth. This provides an opportunity for vacationers to swim not in salty sea water, but also in fresh river water.
The beach is the outskirts of the canyons of the island, which, by the way, are quite a few here. A mountain river flows along its bottom, which makes the sea water temperature near the beach somewhat lower than in other parts. In high season, when the temperature rises, it is even more an advantage than disadvantage.
Not far from Preveli there is a monastery having the same name. It consists of two buildings: upper and lower. They are not active, so anyone can wander through the ruins and take original photos.
Due to the fact that this region is protected by the environmental service, the tourism here is very poorly developed. There are no umbrellas, sun beds, water activities, numerous catering establishments and souvenir shops usual for visitors the beach. For those who want to relax from the city rush — this is a great option.
After swimming and relaxing the beach we will go back. After that, be ready for another interesting sight — the Kourtaliotiko Gorge against which you can take stunning photos.
