True lovers of nature will surely like a sightseeing tour to the Samaria Gorge.
It is considered to be the longest gorge in Europe, because its length is 18 kilometres.

This natural interest begins on the Omalos Plateau. It ends in Agia Roumeli village washed by the waters of the Libyan Sea.

Samaria Gorge is famous not only for its impressive area, but also for its rich flora and fauna. Most of the trees are endemics, so the air in this area is clean and healthy. The most prominent representatives of the flora are holm oak, cypress and pine. In total there are more than 4 hundred species of plants. The animal world is also quite diverse and unique. These are rocky-mountain goats, golden eagles, eagles, etc. In 1962 the gorge received the title of National Park for such natural wealth. Tourists are not allowed to carry away the plants and harm the nature. The guards maintain the order in its territory.

Features and Types of Routes

The total length of the tracking is 18 kilometres. It takes about 6 hours to cover this distance. Breaks, passes and photos take a few more hours. Of course, such a tour requires careful preparation and good physical fitness. Particular attention should be paid to proper equipment:

• Comfortable closed shoes (preferably mountain boots);
• Jacket and pants (for the morning time, when it is still chilly);
• Shorts and a t-shirt;
• Headdress;
• Food;
• A bottle of water (it will be possible to get water throughout the whole route in the springs, therefore it is not necessary to take a big bottle).

When it is warm and the weather is fine, you can swim in the sea, so you can take a swimsuit.

Most of the route is represented by a path with sharp stones, so special attention should be paid to comfortable shoes. These can be sport shoes or special trekking boots.

For those who find this route too difficult, there are alternatives.

1. Go down the 900-meter staircase and climb back, admire the beautiful pine forest.
2. Then go about 6 kilometres from Agia Roumeli village, reach the narrowest point of the gorge and go back. This place is conventionally called the “Gate”.

The optimal time to visit the natural attractions is from May to October. Nobody lives on the territory of the preserved area. After this status was assigned to the gorge, a few of its inhabitants moved to the coastal area of the Libyan Sea.

Tarreos River, which often overflows and covers all eleven plains in winter, flows throughout the gorge. Mountain crashes may also occur here. Therefore, sightseeing tours to Samaria are not conducted in winter.
