Gramvousa Island and Balos Lagoon are considered to be the most beautiful places across the globe. These places have a rich and interesting history, as well as excellent conditions for a great rest.
The name Gramvousa combines as many as 2 islands. On the southern side there is the island of Imeri Gramvousa, Agria Gramvousa – on the north. There are several versions interpreting the origin of its name. According to the first of them, it comes from the Venetian expression “Capo Buso”, which means “holy edge”. It’s all because of the cave on the island. According to the second version, the name is translated as “a place where there is a lot of green stuff”. And it’s not about the vegetables. The fact is that the local lands were seized more than once by pirates who coined a lot of money here.
One of the most significant sights on the island is Imeri Gramvousa fortress, which was built by the Venetians as early as the 16th century. For a long time, it was inaccessible due to its shape. Built in the shape of a triangle, it reliably defended a sheer drop the height of which was 137 meters. Many times the Turkish invaders tried to starve it into surrender but all their attempts had failed. For many years it was the place of interest of the invaders and passed from hand to hand. In 1913 it was passed into the possession of the Greek state. To this day, the building is in excellent condition and the excursions are organized there.
Gramvousa Island is often called Pirate Island. Greek mariners had to take up this business. The half-flooded ship is a reminder of their tricks and it can be seen near the southern part of the island.
Further, our route goes to the picturesque Balos Lagoon which will delight you with its:
The unique feature of the lagoon is the fact that it is a place where 3 seas – the Aegean, Libyan and Ionian, meet each other. At different times of the day, the local waters change in 17 different shades, which is a truly amazing and unforgettable scene. Due to the fact that the lagoon is closed by hills, you can swim here even when the sea is very rough elsewhere.
If you want to admire all the beauties of the lagoon, on our way we can climb to the sightseeing platform located on the western side of the Korykos Peninsula. From this place you can see the fantastic landscapes of Balos and the island of Gramvousa itself.
Anyone can go on the best journey over the historical and beautiful places accompanied by a qualified guide. During the sightseeing tour you will:
