Elafonisi Beach - Pink Sands

The sands of the Beach are considered to be a unique natural phenomenon. They got their colour due to a small amount of impurities, which are represented by fragments of:

  • Shells;
  • Corals;
  • Sea shells.

There is a legend explaining the pink colour of the sand. According to the legend in 1824 the Turkish invaders attacked the island. They ruthlessly killed more than 700 local citizens. In memory of the innocently died people the memorial was installed at the highest point of Elafonissi and the colour of the sand is a reminder of the tragic event.

You can see such a colour of the sand not the coast, but also at a shallow depth. The coast is washed by the waters of the Libyan Sea. The water here is crystal clear and completely safe for swimming.

Sights

The beach is located in the south-west of Crete, 76 kilometres from the town of Chania. The road passes through the majestic gorges. We will also go through olive and orange plantations and have a chance to see original mountain settlements.

We will be able to see Agia Sophia Cave, which is famous for stalagmites and the chapel built inside it. At the foot of the cave, you can visit a roadside cafe, where you can take a short break and drink cold coffee or freshly squeezed orange juice.

Further we will continue our journey along a beautiful serpentine road passing Cretan villages and olive groves. Having passed through the mountain ridge, you will see a wonderful view of the Libyan Sea. Very soon we will get to Chrysoskalitissa Monastery. When visiting the Monastery, men should be dressed in trousers and outerwear; women should have knees and shoulders covered. At the entrance to the Monastery you can take the blankets and scarves.

After visiting the Monastery, it will take us ten minutes to get to the Elafonissi Beach. You will have 3 hours of free time for swimming, relaxing and taking photos.

On our way back, we will stop at a roadside shop for tasting olive oil, Cretan thyme honey and, of course, raki — local vodka. After that we will go to the Cretan tavern.

Itinerary

Agia Sofia Cave

We’re going to visit Cave of Agia Sofia with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

Within 40 min of Chania we reach the tree-lined gorge of the Village of Topolia. There is a 300-meter-high wall and the little chapel of Agia Sofia built in a cave.

Here you will be able to explore the many stalactites and the unique view of the gorge. ‘The Romanza’ canteen is the place to refresh with an array of Cretan specialties and delights. You will spot the local men wearing traditional Cretan clothing from decades ago.

This stop lasts about 30 minutes and then we continue south.

Chrisoskalitissa Monastery

A visit to the Monastery of Chrisoskalitsa is a must. Tradition has it that one of the 90 stairs to the top is a Golden Stair, from where the monastery gets its name. It is said that only a person without sin can see the Golden Stair. The monastery is still cared for by its faithful nuns.

The surrounding view is exceptional. Located at 285 m above the sea level this place is truly sublime in its natural beauty, spirituality and history.

Remember that to visit this place you need to wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders.

This stop takes half an hour, then we head straight to the beach.

Elafonissi Beach

We arrive at Elafonissi around noon. By far one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, Elafoissi is situated on the south-west coast. A tropical effect is created by its white and pink coral sands. Head to the right for shallow water in a small enclosed lagoon ideal for the children.

A walk through the lagoon to the islet is most worthwhile as you will discover this unique coastline.

This place is so unique with its unbelievable colors, and unique history. The coral sands and warm shallow waters attract swimmers, spear fishermen, and windsurfers from the world over.

Beaches are very well equipped. You can rent beach beds, umbrellas and have lunch here.

Elos Village

Our journey will end with a traditional meal at a Cretan tavern in the village of Elos.

Return to Chania area, travel time 1 hour 15 minutes.
