Falasarna is one of the most popular destinations in Crete.
It is located in the western part of the island. The town is famous for its numerous historical sights, as well as comfortable beaches. Its picturesque nature should be specially noted since it makes this place one of the most beautiful in the world.

History

The history of this place goes back to the ancient times. According to archaeological findings, the town was founded in around the VII century BC. At that time, it was one of the most influential towns of Crete.

The main wealth of Falasarna was the port, which had quite favourable location. The harbour was closed, and the ships left the harbour through a special channel. The port itself was reliably protected by high walls. The inhabitants of the town were engaged in growing products on their fertile lands, and such products were profitably sold in nearby territories.

In the first century BC the port was occupied and destroyed by the Romans. Sometime later an earthquake completely destroyed Falasarna. Despite this, there are quite a few historical monuments on its territory today: fragments of buildings, pottery workshops, ancient burial places, ancient throne, stone tablet with the text of a treaty of peace once concluded between Falasarna and Polirinia.

There is no reliable information about the true purpose of the throne. Some believe that it was used for speakers, others – as a pedestal of the statue of Diktinna. In honour of this goddess even a temple was constructed in the town.

Modern Falasarna

Today, Falasarna is a tourist resort. It is convenient to stay here for a comfortable rest and for travelling along the west coast of the island. Unlike other resorts, this one is not so much promoted. Therefore, even in high season, local beaches are not crowded.
