The resort town of Chania is located in the western part of Crete. It is the object of interest of many tourists due to its interesting history, unique sights and distinct beauty.
The town is interesting because several cultures are interweaving here:
Initially, the territory belonged to Kidon – the Roman king. After that, it was occupied by the Byzantine rulers. The greatest prosperity fell on the period of the Venetian rule. Then Chania was called La Canea. To this day, cultural and architectural values created by the Byzantine rulers have been preserved:
After the fall of Constantinople, the Turks occupied the town and rebuilt it in their own way. People did not like such authority and they repeatedly rebelled against it. Only in 1913, Chania became independent and joined the Greek state.
Today Chania consists of 2 parts: old (historical) and new (modern). The Old Town, in which many historic buildings have been preserved, is of special interest. It consists of 5 quarters connected by streets. They are very narrow and paved with stone blocks. This gives the town a flavour and originality.
Our journey will start from the hill of the Prophet Elijah, from where you can admire beautiful views of the town. The Hassan Pasha Mosque rises in the Venetian port where the exhibition hall is located. It regularly hosts various exhibitions. The port is one of the main attractions of the town. Its uniqueness relates to the fact that throughout the time of your stay, it seems that you are in different places. This feeling is created thanks to the play of light and the “mosaic” of port buildings.
Next to the port there is the Fortezza Fortress, from where you can see the picturesque scenery of the port. From here you can see the lighthouse, on which the Greek flag was fixed in 1913. Here is the Maritime Museum, where you can see the collection of models of ships, various marine devices and household items. Here you can see the layout of the town of the XVII century.
Walking through the Jewish Quarter, you can see a part of the defensive construction, as well as the largest church on the island, the Church of St. Francis. Today the Archaeological Museum is located here, and its collections are represented by ancient unique exhibits and findings from various eras.
This is not all sights that you can see during a walk around the town. The interweaving of different cultures, picturesque surroundings and the distinctive culture of the town arouse interest and compel attention.
