At the island of Crete we have a lot of walking possibilities, the most nice are those into the gorges. Especially at the west side of the island, we have a lot of gorges. Some very famous and crowded, others unknown. With of course a lot of differences in difficulty levels.

We would like to take you far away from tourist crowds, to the beauty of nature in the mountains. The Kydoni gorge is situated near the village Karanos, at the feet of the White Mountains, at an altitude of 550 m. from sea level. Traveling time approximately half-hour through a beautiful landscape.

As we arrive at Karanos we will make a stop at the village square, to visit a traditional kafeneion. Its worth to have a look inside, you get the feeling you go back in time. You can have something to drink and use the toilet.
When we are ready, our driver will bring us into five minutes to the entrance of the gorge. This gorge is only 2 km. long/short, depends how you take it….

The gorge is hidden in the great shade of a little green forest, with an astonishing nature beauty. Even throughout the dryness summer times. For healthy people without walking problems, crossing the gorge does not have a high difficulty level. Walking time approximately about 1.5 hours. The path is going up and down next to a small river. We will meet a few caves, one at the begin and a few at the end of the gorge. At the exit of the gorge we will meet the river MAYROPILIOTIS and after ten minutes more walking we arrive at the meeting point where the driver is waiting to take us in a short time to the village of Meskla.

There we have the opportunity for lunch or a drink at a local tavern in the shadow of the trees. If you are not tired yet, the bus can bring us about 500 m up to another miracle of nature. This will take about half-hour to go and return with unbelievable pictures!

NOTES

Clients must wear walking /athletic shoes.
Take a bottle of water.
As mentioned, people with knee or other leg problems cannot participate. Children love this walk!
