Botanical Garden

Not far from Chania, to the south of the town, there is a Botanical Garden. It is one of the most prominent and popular attractions of the island of Crete.

History of Creation

The opening of the Garden was held in 2009. This event was preceded by a fire occurred in 2003. Many gardens, where a large number of unique plants grew, suffered as a result of this natural disaster. The idea of ​​reconstruction of the Botanical Garden at the place of a fire belongs to one Cretan family being the author of a private project. Its main purpose was to create a botanical garden, where samples of not only Greek flora, but also plants from other parts of the world will be presented.

Special Features

The area of ​​the Botanical Garden is 20 hectares. It is located at the foothills of the White Mountains. A wide variety of different trees and shrubs grow on the territory, for example, citrus groves, fruit and tropical trees, many vineyards, herbs. Fruiting trees and flowering shrubs create a unique atmosphere of a fabulous place.

Sightseeing tour of the Botanical Garden takes 2 hours at an average. It will be interesting both for adults and children. This is a great opportunity to get acquainted with a huge variety of Greek flora, as well as see plants from other countries.

Fauna of this Garden should be noted specially. Going down the path, you can see a small picturesque lake, in the territory of which there is a large number of different birds.

Since the garden is located on the mountainside, it has a peculiar relief. The winding path gradually goes down. For the most comfortable walk around the territory, it is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes (preferably of a sport type).
